Tourism is estimated to contribute to generating around 5% of carbon emissions globally. In addition, waste generation, the degradation of natural ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity are some of the environmental challenges associated with the growth of the sector.
For example, Aguas Calientes, where Machu Picchu, the main tourist attraction in our country, is located, generated a total of 3,050 tons of waste during 2022, and during the first four months of this year alone, 500 tons of waste were already generated. Fortunately, tourism stakeholders can take a proactive role in the face of these collateral effects. Every year, LimaTours conducts audits to monitor its impact, at the level of our own offices and the tourist services we offer in the fourteen destinations in Peru where we operate. Thus, we have determined that our main cause of carbon emissions comes from hotels, then from tourist transportation, and finally, to a lesser extent, from home-work transportation of staff. Fortunately, we have a long-term plan for the progressive mitigation of carbon emissions, with a projection of -33% by 2030. A commitment that we have assumed as part of our adherence to the Glasgow Pact, guided by the renowned international environmental organization, Green Initiative. Our joint work allows us to offset our carbon footprint, through financial contributions destined to environmental projects certified by the United Nations.
We also encourage a participatory role for the passenger from the beginning to the end of their trip. All our passengers receive training in good practices at the beginning of their excursion, which allows us to prevent 50% of the impact on the environment. These efforts, among others, recently earned us the title of First Carbon Neutral Tour Operator in Peru, certified by the Green Initiative. Another milestone in our history that we trust sets a sector precedent for the promotion of responsible practices. We are aware that the megadiversity with which our country has been privileged also implies a great responsibility. For this reason, we have taken a firm position aligned with the sustainable development goals established by the United Nations. We are pleased to provide our clients with the certainty that doing tourism with LimaTours is doing responsible tourism.
